My Final Post of the 2018/2019 School Year

June 20, 2019

Dear Families,

In a letter I sent you last July, I told you how excited I was to be your child’s fourth grade teacher this year. Well, after 180 days as Room 9’s classroom teacher, I must tell you how sad I am the school year is ending. I enjoyed an incredible journey this year with your children, as we all grew academically, socially, and emotionally.

Our growth as a community was due in large part to who your children are and to you as parents. Your children’s passion for learning, their creativity in expressing themselves, and their willingness to take risks throughout the year made for meaningful daily dialogue in Room 9. I learned many things this year from your children that I will carry with me into the fall with a new group of anxious learners, one of which is students’ undeniable quest for learning.

In celebrating our last day together, your children and I discussed how academically, socially, and emotionally ready they are to face the challenges of 5th grade. I have no doubt that each student will have a very rewarding, meaningful, and successful year in Grade 5. I mentioned to each student yesterday in one-on-one closing meetings that I want and expect them to have a great summer break, with loads of fun and laughter. I also told them that occasional math practice (math apps, multiplication and division facts, long division, 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication) and literacy practice (literacy apps, reading, and visiting the library) during the summer would benefit them greatly as they move on to Grade 5.

One of my goals at the beginning of this year was to create a “community of learners.” I believe that working together we did just that. I am extremely proud of the accomplishments of each and every one of my students. Each student should feel good about his and her growth as a fourth grader.

Thank you for all your support during the year. I hope you and your family have a wonderful summer, and I look forward to seeing you some time in the fall at Fox Hill.

Sincerely,

David M. Daley

Happy Mother's Day!!!

Dear Room 9 Mothers & Grandmothers,

Happy Mother's Day from everyone in Room 9! It's obvious to me from speaking with your children that your nurturing support, endless patience, and unconditional love are very much appreciated by your daughters and sons. I would like to add my appreciation to each of you for the guidance you give your children each and every day. Your kids are lucky to have you!

This week, we made a very special "Happy Mother's Day" card for you. Enjoy!

"Understanding and Helping My Child With Homework"

Last night, the Fox Hill PTO hosted a workshop for parents on "Understanding and Helping My Child With Homework." Approximately 15 parents attended, and from comments I heard, parents enjoyed and appreciated the workshop.

Mrs. Jaffe, Mrs. Young, Mrs. Lisano, Ms. Greene, and I presented the workshop to help you, parents, in supporting your child with homework.

Homework is an important part of school life, and we want to support parents and children in every way we can.

Below is the slide show presentation shared at the workshop. Enjoy!

Bridges Together - Session 1

This morning, Grade 4 students participated in our kick-off session for this year's Bridges Together program. Each 4th grade classroom has its own senior volunteers for this very worthwhile program. Both kids and seniors learned much about each other during Lesson 1: "Getting to Know You." It's amazing how 10 year-olds and seniors have so much in common! Enjoy some photos from today's kick-off session.

Happy Holidays!

Dear Kids, Parents, and Grandparents,

Thank you, kids, for your dedication to learning; for your commitment to being respectful, responsible, safe, & kind; and for your constant ability to make me smile. I look forward to continuing our growth as individuals and as a Room 9 community in 2019.

This Year's Winter Concert

Yesterday morning, Grade 4 and 5 Fox Hill students performed their 2018 Winter Concert for all Grades K through 3 Fox Hill students. The performance included 3 individual segments: the Fox Hill Strings Orchestra (under the direction of Mr. Samulak); the Fox Hill Band (under the direction of Mr. Napierkowski); and the Fox Hill Chorus (under the direction of Mrs. Medico and Ms. Harrigan). The winter concert, Celebration of Peace, was a smashing success! The kids gave it their all and left the stage with a well-deserved sense of accomplishment. Congratulations to all performers! Enjoy some of the performance below. (P.S. To this critic, today's performance for parents & grandparents was even better!)

Reminder: Winter Concert Dress and Instruments

Hi families,

The 4th and 5th grade Winter Concerts are on:
  • Monday, December 17 (for Fox Hill students in grades K to 3) and
  • Tuesday, December 18 at 8:30 a.m. (for families).
4th and 5th grade students should come to school dressed in their black pants and white shirts both days. (On Friday, I told the kids they could bring a change of clothes to put on after each performance.)

Please help students in band and orchestra remember to bring their instruments to school both days.

I hope to see you at Tuesday morning's concert!

David
