STEM Week at Fox Hill

In an effort to boost students’ interest and raise awareness of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education, the Massachusetts Governor's Office declared a statewide STEM Week from October 22-26, 2018, asking educators at all grade levels to participate by planning lessons, events, and activities focused on science, technology, engineering, and math throughout the week.

Burlington Public Schools adhered to the governor's call, and accordingly, STEM Week was announced at Fox Hill School. Room 9 kids visited the Learning Commons twice this week to program, build, learn, and share their science, technology, engineering, and math knowledge. Here are the kids, along with Mrs. Nolte's students, enjoying STEM Week activities.

Today's Beekeeping Program

This morning, Ms. Pavlicek, from the Burlington Science Center, presented a Beekeeping Program to our Grade 4 scientists. Ms. Pavlicek was very impressed with the kids' knowledge of bees, pollination, and pollinators! Her program included a slide presentation, discussion about bees, and Ms. Pavlicek's role as a beekeeper. We then went outside to observe Ms. Pavlicek in her beekeeper's garb. Enjoy the photos from today's program. Thank you, Ms. Pavlicek, for your excellent program this morning!

Today's "Indoor Glow Run!"

Thank you, PTO, for organizing this year's Fun Run! During the past nine days, Fox Hill students learned character traits that will help strengthen them and our world, including citizenship, growth mindset, zest, integrity, and teamwork.

Below is a photo of Room 9's "Daley's Devils" mugging for the camera after their successful "Indoor Glow Run."

Friday, October 12, is Red Sox Day at Fox Hill!

Tomorrow, October 12, is Boston Red Sox Day at Fox Hill. It’s been an exciting season so far, but the Sox' work is not yet done. Saturday night, they open a best of seven game series against the Houston Astros in the American League Championship Series.

If you have any Red Sox attire, or anything red (shirts, shorts, sweats, hats, sneakers) ~ and you choose to, why not wear them to school tomorrow to celebrate the Red Sox success so far this season!

We Need Your Help, Kids!

Dear Room 9 Community of Learners,

As you are aware, we love being in your classroom. You treat us both with the utmost respect, and care for us by making sure we have food, water, and a clean home. You also make sure we get plenty of exercise and have loads of social interaction. We do, however, have a special request.

Please, please, please bring in some cardboard (including paper towel rolls, toilet paper rolls, egg cartons, cereal and pasta boxes, etc.). We gnaw on cardboard to keep our teeth from growing too long, and we love playing with it. Have you ever seen us running through the paper towel and toilet paper rolls? It's a hoot!

Anyway, we're running low on cardboard. So please bring some to school whenever you can. That way, we'll be sure to have a great school year!

Love,
Caramel & Hershey

P.S. Please make sure any cardboard you bring to school is not wet or soiled with food. Cardboard like that could hurt us.

Today's Land's Sake Field Trip

As part of our "Plant & Animal Structures and Function" science unit, today Fox Hill 4th graders went on a field trip to Land's Sake, in Weston. Land's Sake is a not-for-profit organization "supporting environmental education programs, food donation programs, and land management." Our 4th grade scientists searched for, identified, and discussed flower pollinators; dissected flowers; and picked and tasted fresh herbs and vegetables growing on the Land's Sake farm.

Room 9 students and I would like to thank Mrs. Karampekios and Ms. Ali for chaperoning today's field trip. We would also like to thank the Fox Hill PTO for helping to defray the cost of our field trip through their generous donation.

Moments from today's exciting field trip follow. Enjoy!
