Open Letter to Students from Dr. Conti

Hello parents and students,

Superintendent Eric Conti drafted an open letter to middle and high school students that he has posted on his blog (Open Letter to Students). Dr. Conti's message is applicable to all students (including elementary students). I'm sharing Dr. Conti's message with you to demonstrate my commitment that anyone and everyone belongs in Room 20.

I was just thinking...

Wouldn't it be great if we all shared the sentiment offered by Carole King in her 1971 Grammy-winning "Song of the Year," You've Got a Friend?

You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I'll come running to see you again
Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you have to do is call
And I'll be there
You've got a friend

In Room 20, we strive each and every day to treat ALL with the respect they deserve. We accept, unconditionally, the strengths and areas for improvement exhibited by our classmates, family members, friends, and even those with whom we have not yet established a real connection. We don't judge. We lend a hand to everyone in need. In addition to being a "Community of Learners," we are a "Safe Place for ALL."

Heroes Assembly

This past Friday, Fox Hill held a school-wide assembly to celebrate and recognize heroes. At this "Heroes Assembly," students at all grade levels spoke about what makes a hero, how we can all be every day heroes, and how to give thanks to today's and yesterday's heroes throughout our community, nation, and the world.

Grade 4 students all identified someone who is a hero to them, and more importantly why and how that person is a hero to them. Five Grade 4 students read their hero essays at the assembly. Each student performed beautifully in reciting his and her heartfelt messages.

Below is a video of those students reading their essays. Prior to the video, though, are some photos from (and after) the assembly. Grade 5 students asked local firefighters and police to attend the assembly as their heroes. All students had an opportunity following the assembly to "ham it up" in front of the fire trucks! A great time was had by all!

Bridges: Growing Together Kick-Off Session

This morning, Grade 4 students participated in the kick-off session for our Bridges: Growing Together program. Each 4th grade classroom has its own senior volunteers for this very worthwhile program. Both kids and seniors learned loads from each other during Lesson 1: Getting to Know You. One of my Room 20 students commented to me following the session, "Before we started today, I was nervous. But now I feel comfortable!"

Enjoy some photos from today's kick-off session.

December Room 20 Students of the Month

I am pleased to announce December's Students of the Month in Room 20. They are Sam C. and Mariela H. Throughout the month both Sam and Mariela demonstrated a superior work ethic. They are an integral piece of the Room 20 puzzle, showing a propensity to work hard and Be the One! Their willingness to go above and beyond what is asked of them is clearly evident. Congratulations, Sam and Mariela, for this well-deserved honor.
