Bridges: Growing Together

Beginning in January, all Fox Hill Grade 4 students will be participating in a six-week program called "Bridges ~ Growing Together." Bridges is an intergenerational program for elementary school students and older adults living in our community. The goal of Bridges is to promote mutual respect, understanding, and friendship between people of different generations.

The six-week curriculum includes the following:

Lesson 1: Getting to know you
Lesson 2: Schools then and now
Lesson 3: Ethnicities, heirlooms, & traditions
Lesson 4: Lifelong teaching and learning
Lesson 5: How are you smart?
Lesson 6: How old is old?

Check this blog periodically for Bridges' updates, photos, videos, etc., as we undertake this year's program.

Our Spectacular Winter Concert is History!

Last Friday morning and afternoon, Grade 4 and 5 Fox Hill students performed their 2016 Winter Concert for parents, grandparents, and all other Fox Hill students. The two performances each included 3 individual segments: the Fox Hill Strings Orchestra (under the direction of Mrs. Canzano); the Fox Hill Band (under the direction of Mr. Napierkowski); and the Fox Hill Chorus (under the direction of Ms. Calhau and Mr. Zavisza). The winter concert, A Walk Through Winter, was a smashing success! The kids gave it their all and left the stage with a well-deserved sense of accomplishment. Congratulations to all performers! Enjoy a few snippets of their afternoon performance below.

Fox Hill Winter Concert ~ Friday, December 16, at 9:30 a.m.

Image result for winter concert

The Fox Hill Chorus and Band proudly present this year's Winter Concert for parents and grandparents on Friday, December 16, at 9:30 a.m., in the Fox Hill Cafeteria.

As a reminder, students should bring their concert clothes (plain white shirt and plain black pants or skirt) with them to school on Thursday, December 15 for their final dress rehearsal. On Friday, December 16, students should wear their concert clothes to school for their 9:30 a.m. performance.

I've seen some of the rehearsals and am awestruck at the talents of this year's 4th and 5th grade students! If you have an opportunity to attend this year's Winter Concert, please do so ~ you won't be disappointed!

WANTED: Student Math Teachers

I am providing students with an opportunity to conduct a future math lesson in Room 20. By Tuesday, January 3, 2017, interested students are to submit a letter of interest to me that explains why I should select them to teach a math class. In their letter of interest, students must respond to the following:

  • Tell me why you deserve this opportunity.
  • What have you done in Room 20, Fox Hill, and at home this year to demonstrate your academic, social, and emotional growth?
  • What are some ways you have been the "1" this year?
  • What strategies would you use to maintain a quiet, organized classroom while conducting your lesson?
I look forward to students' letters of interest!

A Fox Hill Grade 4 Tradition

A tradition at Fox Hill School is for Grade 4 students to recite the Pledge of Allegiance daily over the school's loud speaker for all to hear. This tradition promotes students' public speaking and presentation skills, skills that are often challenging for students (and adults, too!). This past week, Room 20 students completed their first round of reciting the pledge. Needless to say, every Room 20 student performed beautifully, reciting the pledge clearly, loudly, and slowly. Congratulations, Room 20 students, for a job well done! (Students will have another opportunity later this year ~ in March ~ to again recite the pledge for all Fox Hill students.)

November Students of the Month

I am thrilled to announce that Jesse G. and Audrey L. are Room 20's November Students of the Month. Jesse and Audrey both exhibited great effort in everything they did throughout the month. Included was their drive to stay focused during instruction time, while helping others in class. Jesse and Audrey served as role models to their peers, demonstrating the Fox Hill (and Room 20) values of being respectful, responsible, safe, and kind. Their exemplary behavior was obvious to all Fox Hill students who came in contact with them, whether in classrooms, pods, or at recess. Congratulations to Jesse and Audrey for this very well deserved recognition.
