Guest Visitor to Room 20

This morning, Room 20 received a special visitor from Room 5 ~ Cameron L., Audrey L.'s little brother. "Kindergartner Cam" enjoyed his short visit by exploring our gerbils, Nimbus and Chestnut, watching our guppies swimming to and fro, and most importantly, hugging his big sister!

New Members of the Room 20 Community of Learners

I am pleased to announce new members to this year's Room 20 community. They include returning veterans, Chestnut and Nimbus, two adorable gerbils. In addition, we have approximately 20 colorful fish. While new to Room 20, the fish are quickly adapting to our Room 20 routines and expectations! Chestnut and Nimbus, on the other hand, are having some difficulty in acclimating themselves back in Room 20 after spending the summer on holiday!

Volunteer Orientation Sessions ~ Tuesday, September 27

Tuesday, September 27, at 9:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

Any parents who would like to volunteer in any capacity this year at Fox Hill School MUST attend one of two orientation sessions offered. These sessions are being held tomorrow, Tuesday, September 27, at 9:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. (If parents cannot attend one of these sessions, you must inform me, and I will let the main office know. The main office will then schedule another orientation session for you.)

In addition, any volunteers need to have updated CORIs. If you have any questions about whether you are up-to-date with your CORI, please email me (ddaley@bpsk12.org).

Thanks,
Mr. Daley

"Writing Journal" Runway

On Friday, students "strutted their stuff" on the Room 20 red-carpet runway as they shared their decorated "Writing Journals" with each other. A fun time was had by all! Enjoy their wonderfully decorated journals, while relishing their superb dance moves.

Scholastic Reading Club

Dear Parents,

This year in Room 20, students will have an opportunity to purchase books at affordable prices through the Scholastic Reading Club. With their own books, students will grow as readers, while helping Room 20 earn free books and resources throughout the year. This past week, I sent home the monthly Scholastic flyer with your kids. Please discuss the opportunity to purchase books with your 4th grader. You can order books in two ways: (1) by completing the form in the flyer and returning the form to Room 20, or (2) by ordering online. If the latter, please remember to include our class activation code. That way, Room 20 will get credit for purchases and will earn free books and more for the classroom.

The Room 20 Class Activation Code is: NB6B8.

I will be submitting our first order on September 30, so please return your completed form and payment by that date, or order online by then.

Book Buddies - Week 2

While I posted some pictures of our kick-off Book Buddies session last week with Mrs. Doyle's and Mrs. Carroll's 1st graders, I'm posting more pictures today from yesterday's session since this session epitomized the objectives of Book Buddies, i.e., 4th graders reading to 1st graders to promote reading, listening, and speaking skills for all. I was so impressed with the maturity shown by 4th graders as they read to their 1st grade buddies. Fourth graders not only read beautifully, but they discussed the words and pictures jumping from the pages with their 1st grade buddies to encourage "active listening" skills.

Celebration of Eid al-Adha

Image result for eid al adha 2016In most of the Muslim world today, the faithful are celebrating Eid al-Adha (Feast of Sacrifice), one of the two major holidays in Islam. The day begins with morning prayers. The celebrations continue with visits to friends and family, exchange of gifts, and feasts.

The four-day religious holiday corresponds with the height of the Hajj, the pilgrimage to Mecca that all financially and physically able Muslims are required to undertake once in their lifetime. The pilgrimage annually draws 2,000,000 Muslims.

To all our Muslim friends, we wish you a very happy and peaceful Eid al-Adha.

Session 1 of This Year's Book Buddies!

On Friday, Room 20 4th graders visited Mrs. Doyle's 1st grade classroom, beginning our year-long Book Buddies program. This year, in addition to reading with Mrs. Doyle's students, we are being joined by Mrs. Carroll's 1st graders, too! Throughout the school year, 4th graders will read to their 1st grade book buddies once a week. At today's kick-off session, Room 20's 4th graders helped their 1st grade buddies complete a scavenger hunt. Mrs. Doyle then read "The New Bear at School" by Carrie Wilson to all the students.

The excitement shown on the faces of the 1st and 4th graders during their time together was energetic! If our first session was any indication, this year's Book Buddies will be rewarding for both 1st and 4th graders alike.

"Me" Lunch Bags

Room 20 students filled "Me" Lunch Bags with items that said something about themselves. They then shared their bags' contents with classmates. This activity gave students an opportunity to learn a little bit more about their classmates.
